Imperfect Circle

tambourine
2006
duration 5’30”

Imperfect Circle for solo tambourine was commissioned by percussionist Christopher Cree. The title was not only chosen as a reference to the shape of the instrument, but also describes the cyclic, but intentionally skewed, formal structure of the piece. The work consists of an opening section of music, occupying the first minute of the piece, followed by three significantly altered variations of the opening. Each of these sections is unified by the recurrence of distinct motives but varied in terms of playing technique, dynamics, length, and level of activity.

Imperfect Circle was premiered by percussionist Christopher Cree on 1/31/2007 in Urbana, IL.
