Intrinsic Motion

orchestra (2,2,2,2. 4,2,3,1. timp., 3 perc., pn, strings)
1999
duration 5’30”

Intrinsic Motion is in its third incarnation. It began as a movement in a set of three short piano pieces, it was then arranged for a woodwind sextet, and finally, it was orchestrated and extensively expanded to its present form. The title is derived from the idea that certain aspects of a melody will call to mind a particular rhythm upon which the melody would best be juxtaposed. For example, the opening four measures were originally composed in 6/8, but the melody, outlining E to Ab, suggests a falling motion which lends itself more to omitting an eight note from the meter than to sustaining a tone to fill a measure. Therefore the rhythmic motion of the piece is intrinsically connected to its melodic movement. The melodic and harmonic material for the entire work is derived from the intervallic relationships found in the opening four measures.

Intrinsic Motion was read by the University of Florida orchestra and the University of Texas orchestra. Please contact me to purchase scores, for perusal scores or recordings, or to commission a new work.
