Drift is a depiction of the mind moving through different states of consciousness. These states are represented by distinct musical textures or sound worlds. The piece opens with abrupt changes between these textures. As the piece progresses, however, these textures are developed, layered, and morphed into one another until it is impossible to know which exists at any moment. By the end of the piece, the mind is trapped in a continuous spiral between consciousness and unconsciousness from which it cannot escape. Drift was composed and realized at the University of Illinois Experimental Music Studios.

Drift was premiered on February 24, 2004 at the University of Illinois with subsequent performances at the 2005 Florida Electro-Acoustic Music Festival, the 2005 Confluences - Art and Technology at the Edge of the Millennium in Spain, the ICMC 2006, and Electronic Music Midwest 2006.

Drift was awarded first prize in the 2005 Electro-Acoustic Miniatures International Contest.
