Psychonetic depicts an individual’s struggle to cope with the demands of every day life and the desperate search for balance. Composers, in particular, are constantly being pulled in multiple directions at once: meeting deadlines for new works, practicing their instruments, preparing classes, grading papers, spending time with friends and family, and multitude of other tasks. It seems that many are walking a fine line between balance and insanity. Psychonetic opens with abrupt shifts between three distinct musical sections, each with its own texture, level of activity, and personality. Each section represents one of the many activities that competes for our attention each day. These three sections are developed, layered, and gradually morphed into one another as the music progresses, depicting the individual ‘s futile attempt to rein in the unending tasks and keep some level of sanity.

Psychonetic for eight players was premiered by the University of Illinois New Music Ensemble on October 29, 2002.

Psychonetic for six players was read by the Bang on a Can All-Stars on November 11, 2004.
