Swirling Sea

euphonium and 2-channel fixed media
2000
duration 7’30”

While working on Swirling Sea in 2005, the sounds and textures of the electronic part called to mind images of the ocean: from the calm ebb and flow of waves on the beach, to the lonely cries of seagulls, to powerful and menacing ocean squalls. I was fortunate to be able to escape land-locked Illinois for a vacation to the Florida coast when I was about halfway through the piece. This much-need trip reinforced these images and inspired new ones as I completed the work.

Many of the sounds in the electronic part are derived from recordings the composer made of Ken Steinsultz playing the euphonium. These recordings, along with some additional, contrasting sounds, were shaped and processed on the computer through pitch shifting, time stretching, filtering, layering, time delay, and other procedures. In effect, the electronic part can be considered a massive euphonium and percussion ensemble that often echoes material presented by the soloist and sometimes spawns new material.

Swirling Sea was commissioned by Ken Steinsultz who gave its premiere on January 21, 2006.
