Zomtra

solo piano (2001)
transcription for brass quintet (2004)
duration 2’30”

Zomtra is a short piece based on Mozart's Rondo Alla Turca (the last movement of his Piano Sonata in A Major K 331). Zomtra begins by looping very small, unrecognizable fragments of Mozart's piece. As it progresses, the fragments being looped are gradually extended until the underlying composition becomes apparent. The material is looped in such a way that Zomtra can actually be played along with Mozart's Rondo and the ends of phrases in both pieces are reached simultaneously. Zomtra can be thought of as a musical realization of a scratched CD that keeps on skipping. Sometimes the skipping creates sounds that are just as interesting as the original recording.

Zomtra was originally composed for solo piano in 2001 and was transcribed for for brass quintet in 2004.

Zontra for piano was premiered by the composer on September 23, 2004 at the University of Illinois.
