Five Character Pieces explores the contrasting moods and emotions suggested by each movement’s title. The movements may be played alone, in small groups, or as a complete set. Five Character Pieces is a companion work to my 2017 solo piano piece Journey; both were composed using the same underlying harmonic scheme and feature similar melodic and rhythmic material. While Journey is a substantial eleven-movement virtuosic work, Five Character Pieces is intended for advanced student pianists.
